FAQ'S for the 2024 sunbuild top end gran fondo

Do you have an Event Booklet?

How long do I have to complete the course?

There will be a 9:30 AM cut-off time for riders to begin their final lap, regardless of their overall distance. That means that riders in the 122km ride have 3 hours to complete their first 82km (two laps) or they will need to forgo their third lap and ride down McMinn St to the Finish.

Road Closures will be in place until 11am, at which time all participants will need to be finished.

How is traffic being managed on the route?

The entire route for all rides will be completely closed to public traffic with traffic controllers stationed at all points of entry to Tiger Brennan Drive. These road closures will be in place until 11 am, so all participants will need to be finished and off course by that time. Any participants remaining on course as we approach 11AM will be approached by a volunteer support vehicle and offered to be taken back to the finish or to continue their ride on the bike paths and open roads to return to the Waterfront.

What time do events start?

7:35 AM - 82km Inpex Top End Tonne Start

7:45am - 15km NTRS Top End Short Fondo Start

What kind of bike can I ride?

Riders can ride nearly any bike in the event, including road bikes, mountain bikes, city bikes, hybrid bikes and cross bikes.

Electric-assisted bikes will be allowed, but will not be permitted to start with the main bunch in any event distance. There will be a separate start time 1-2 minutes after the main group in each event for electric bikes, and electric bike riders will appear in a separate section of the results.

Tandem riders are allowed to enter the event with only one entry required for the two riders of the tandem bicycle. Tandems are not required to have a visually- or otherwise-impaired stoker (second rider) but can also be ridden in this event by two able-bodied participants. Tandem entrants who purchase one entry will be treated as one participant for all merchandise and entry inclusion purposes.

Handcycles, tricycles, and recumbent bicycles are allowed, however depending on rider confidence and ability participants using any of these may be asked to ride at the back of their start wave or start individually moments after the start wave for the safety of all participants.

Bikes with aero or time trial bars fitted are not permitted to be ridden in any of the Fondo events. Participants with aero bars will be asked to remove them or not start the event.

Who can enter?

All participants under 12 years old on the event day must be accompanied in the same event by a parent or guardian who is also registered to ride in the event.

Participants in the 5km and 15km events can be any age, however we recommend that participants born after Dec 31, 2016 be entered in the 5km event rather than the 15km.

Participants in the 41km Darwin Family Law Half Fondo must be born in 2012 or earlier.

Participants in the 82km Inpex Fondo must be born in 2010 or earlier.

Participants in the 122km Sunbuild Top End Gran Fondo must be born in 2008 or earlier.

Who gets a Jersey?

The first 100 entrants in both the 122km and 82km events will receive a jersey with their entry fee guaranteed on event day. Additional entries in those events will have their jerseys ordered after the event. All other participants can purchase a discounted jersey for $65 (RRP $149) during the entry process until stock is exhausted.

The 2024 Sunbuild Top End Gran Fondo Jersey Design has been finalised and extends an already great partnership between the Darwin Cycling Club and Larrakia, Wardaman and Kurrijarri artist, Danella Lee. This year’s motif is an echidna, riding the rolling hills of the course. Once again we’ve partnered with Santini to ensure this year’s jerseys are of the highest quality – we want you wearing this kit all year round, until the next one!

What events are there on offer?

There are six events to choose from (4 Fondo distances, a Family Ride and a virtual event), more information is available here.

Are there pit stops out on course?
